Chapter Ten

Sitting in the middle of Derrick’s backyard proved to be a good spot for doing Magus-y things. Surrounded on all sides by a high privacy fence and shrouded from the trees in the front of the yard by the house itself, it was isolated but still connected. Part of that might be the sound of people in the house at Callie’s back. Derrick’s parents had arrived the night before, full of sad smiles and welcome for the new Magus. Even though she was essentially the replacement for their dead daughter, Derrick’s mom, Elizabeth, drew her into a hug and thanked her for being there. Thanked her.

Callie had retreated under the guise of giving them space to be a family. The truth was, she felt like something of a traitor. Not only did she not want to be Magus, but because of her, Derrick had broken one of the tenets he had held on to so strongly. She’d seen the pain in his glowing eyes the day before when he’d turned his power on Chris. She’d wanted to tell him he didn’t have to, but she understood his reasoning. Chris was a good cop. He’d figure out stuff they didn’t want him to figure out.

Keeping the detective in the dark felt wrong, though—so damned wrong. They had pieces of the puzzle he didn’t, pieces he needed to find justice for Marianne. They should have just brought Chris in at the start, despite the risk of his discovering the bond. Not that Derrick’s concerns were unfounded—he’d just been trying to protect her. Still, they could have lied; they could have misdirected Chris if they needed to. Now that Derrick had used his Knight’s abilities on the detective, now that they’d crossed that line, how could they explain it?

If they went to Chris and told him about her dream and the attempt on her life, they would have to tell him why they hadn’t approached him to begin with. And it might trigger the memory of Derrick using his abilities. She sighed. They’d dug themselves a deep hole, no question.

The only solution for it was to detangle the threads connecting her and Derrick. To unbond them. Then they could go to Chris with what they knew, without the fear of their mistake—her mistake—being uncovered. There had to be a way.

The music of city life surrounded her. In Derrick’s neighborhood, it was muted compared to what it would be closer to downtown, but there was enough noise drifting into the backyard to keep it from being too quiet. Her room had been too still for this, too isolated. Which was weird, because she’d thought she needed absolute silence to concentrate. Not so much.

She didn’t even have to seek out the Magus Channel now. At a thought, it was there, a switch flicking from real life to other. God, she would never get over how beautiful the magic was. Glowing, interconnecting, all colors, all intensities. She still didn’t understand the difference among the colors, but it didn’t matter for this.
